Project Description

Matthew Rangel, Across the Sierra

Across the Sierra, 2008, lithograph, 2.5 x 16 feet

This version of Across the Sierra is 16 feet long. It depicts a seven day Journey within Sequoia National Park in California. Some points of interest are the Nine Lake Basin, the entire Kaweah Peaks range, Kern River Canyon, and Mount Whitney. The print consists of five sections which correspond to US Geological Survey topographic maps. Each section was drawn separately on a lithographic stone and printed in subsequent order from west to east on a single sheet of soft-white Tia Mulberry paper. There are only 4 prints in the edition.

Across the Sierra, Draft, 2006

Across the Sierra, Draft, 2006, lithograph, 19 x 96 inches

This is an early draft of Across the Sierra. It was drawn in pen in ink on drafting vellum and then printed from four lithographic plates. It is on the same scale with the USGS 1:24,000 topographic maps which were used as a guide to make the cross section accurate.
